Donderdag 11 juni, 2009, 20.30, Theatrum Anatomicum, Waag Society,  
Nieuwmarkt 4 Amsterdam.
Donderdag 11 juni zullen Karen Lancel en Hermen Maat hun performance  
installatie TELE_TRUST presenteren in het Theatrum Anatomicum van  
Waag Society. Het publiek kan eraan deelnemen en tegelijk zal een van  
de TELE_TRUST data-veils zich ergens door Amsterdam bewegen en met de  
zaal in contact staan. De beide kunstenaars zullen uitgebreid testen  
en vertellen over de betekenis en werking van hun installatie en het  
geheel zal worden ingeleid door Eric Kluitenberg, schrijver van  
Delusive Spaces en werkzaam bij De Balie.
TELE_TRUST werd ontwikkeld in samenwerking met: V2_Instituut voor  
onstabiele media, Rotterdam, De Balie, Amsterdam en modevormgever AZIZ.
TELE_TRUST: Hoe vertrouwen we elkaar als networking bodies? Moet je  
elkaar daarvoor in de ogen kunnen zien? Of moet je elkaar kunnen  
aanraken?
Met de performance-installatie TELE_TRUST onderzoeken Lancel en Maat  
hoe we in ons veranderende sociale eco-systeem steeds grotere  
transparantie eisen, terwijl we ons kwetsbare lichaam steeds meer  
afschermen door communicatie-technologie. Voor TELE_TRUST ontwierpen  
Lancel en Maat een hybride speelzone voor een kwetsbaar proces, van  
balanceren tussen angst voor EN verlangen naar de ander. Op een  
poëtische en beeldende manier onderzoeken ze de emotionele en sociale  
spanning tussen zichtbaarheid en onzichtbaarheid; tussen privacy en  
vertrouwen.
TELE_TRUST is een ontmoetingsplek.

TELE_TRUST vindt plaats op dynamische, publieke plekken. Hier nodigen  
Lancel en Maat het publiek uit in een netwerk van zes interactieve,  
lichaamsverhullende ‘data-sluiers’. De data-sluiers combineren  
beeldende elementen van lichaamsverhullende kleding uit oosterse en  
westerse tradities. Ze zijn zowel geïnspireerd op een monnikspij en  
een burqa, als op een ‘betrouwbaar’, krijtstrepen zakenkostuum. De  
data-sluier kan door iedereen worden gedragen. Wanneer je een data- 
sluier draagt wordt je lichaam een interface: de stof bestaat uit  
smart textile met ingeweven sensoren. Door aanraking hiervan vormen  
de zes data-sluiers een digitaal netwerk.
- Kan ik je nu aanraken? In TELE_TRUST ontmoet je elkaar in een  
intieme audio-visuele wereld, waarin je op afstand verhalen  
uitwisselt over schoonheid en vervreemding: Met wie ben je hier  
samen? Wie kijkt wie aan? Wie controleert wie? En met wiens lichaam?

Thursday June 11th Karen Lancel and Hermen Maat will present their  
performance-installation TELE_TRUST at the Theatrum Anatomicum of  
Waag Society.The public will participate in the installation and at  
the same time a TELE_TRUST data-veil will roam the Amsterdam public  
space being in constant connection with the event at the  
Theatrum.Both the artists will extensively test and tell the meaning  
and function of TELE_TRUST. The evening will start with an  
introduction to the work by Eric Kluitenberg, author of Delusive  
Spaces and head of the media department of De Balie, Amsterdam.
TELE_TRUST is developed in collaboration with: V2_Institute for  
unstable media, Rotterdam, De Balie, Amsterdam en fashion artist AZIZ
TELE_TRUST: How do we trust each other as networking bodies?  Do we  
need to look each other in the eyes? Or do we need to touch each other?
In TELE_TRUST Lancel and Maat explore how in our changing social eco- 
system we increasingly demand transparency; while at the same time we  
increasingly cover our vulnerable bodies with personal communication- 
technology. For TELE_TRUST Lancel and Maat designed a hybrid play  
zone for a vulnerable process, of balancing between fear AND desire  
for the other. In a visual, poetic way they explore the emotional and  
social tension between visibility and invisibility; privacy and trust.
TELE_TRUST is a meeting place.

TELE_TRUST takes place in dynamic public spaces. Here Lancel and Maat  
invite the audience in six interactive, full body data-veils. The  
data-veils combine visual elements of full body covering wearables in  
eastern and western traditions. They are inspired by a monks’ habit  
and a burqa; as well as by a ‘trustworthy’ chalk stripe business  
suit. Everyone can wear a data-veil. When wearing a data-veil your  
body becomes an interface: flexible sensors are woven in the smart  
textile of each data-veil. When touching your own body, the six data- 
veils form a digital network.
- Can I touch you now? By touching your body in the data-veil you can  
meet others in the network. You meet in an intimate virtual  
experience, to exchange stories on horror and beauty: Am I here with  
you? Who is watching who? Who is controlling who? And in whose body?
