Creative Learning / DE MEERWAARDE VAN ICT IN HET ONDERWIJS

Nederland telt acht expertisecentra voor ICT, waarvan er een is ondergebracht in het Creative Learning programma van Waag Society. De centra komen op 5 februari bij Waag Society bijeen om van gedachten te wisselen over de meerwaarde van ict in het onderwijs. Een verslag van de discussie verschijnt in de vorm van een publicatie, die komend voorjaar zal worden verspreid over alle scholen voor primair en voortgezet onderwijs. In deze publicatie zal daarnaast aandacht worden besteed aan good practices van de expertisecentra.

Interfacing Access/ TIEN VERHALENTAFELS

Begin vorig jaar werd bij zorginstelling het Twiskehuis in Amsterdam-Noord de Verhalentafel feestelijk binnengehaald. Aan de Verhalentafel, een rond meubel met ingebouwde schermen, hebben drie tot zes ouderen ruime keuze uit korte beeld- en geluidsfragmenten uit de twintigste eeuw. De tafel biedt de mogelijkheid om commentaar op het archiefmateriaal in te spreken, te bewaren en terug te luisteren.
Op 9 februari dit jaar begint de plaatsing van tien Verhalentafels bij zorginstellingen op verschillende plaatsen in Nederland. Bij deze instellingen zal het Centrum voor Verouderingsonderzoek van de VU onderzoeken of de Verhalentafel een bijdrage levert aan de vermindering van sociaal isolement. Er zijn gesprekken met het Trimbos-instituut over een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van de tafel bij reminiscentie-training.

Creative Learning / LOKAAL ERFGOED OP SCHOOL

Steeds meer musea, bibliotheken, monumenten en archeologische instellingen digitaliseren hun bronnen. Hoe kun je deze digitale collecties toegankelijk maken voor het onderwijs aan leerlingen in de tweede en derde klas van de havo en het vwo? Het project Login Lokaal nodigt scholen en erfgoedinstellingen en scholen uit om daar samen met Waag Society/ Expertisecentrum voor Culturele Vakken en ICT en Erfgoed Actueel een antwoord op te formuleren, in de vorm van een methodiek en een online leeromgeving. Het uitgangspunst daarbij is het lokale erfgoed, in de buurt van de school.
Geïnteresseerde scholen en erfgoedinstellingen kunnen een plan voor ontsluiting van lokaal erfgoed indienen bij een commissie. In 2004 worden twee door de commissie gekozen regionale projecten uitgewerkt.

De kick-off van Login Lokaal vindt plaats op 19 februari in Teylers Museum, Haarlem.

Public Research / STALLMAN EN HART OP FREEDOM OF INFORMATION AVOND

Waag Society en Vrijschrift presenteren een avond met Richard Stallman en Michael Hart.
Richard Stallman houdt een betoog over de belemmering die software octrooien vormen voor het werk van programmeurs, voor computergebruikers en de economische vooruitgang. Michael Hart geeft een lezing over het Gutenberg project, waarin boeken waarvan het auteursrecht is verlopen, via het internet worden ontsloten. Aansluitend vindt een panel discussie plaats onder leiding van Vincent Everts.
Project Gutenberg is het initiatief van Michael Hart, dat hij sinds 1971 uitvoert aan de Universiteit van Illinois. Met hulp van een grote schare vrijwilligers zijn binnen het project al 10.000 e-books gepubliceerd. Vrijschrift ondersteunt het project vanuit Nederland.
Online magazine Salon noemde Richard Stallman 'the saint of free software'. Stallman is de oprichter van de GNU beweging en de Free Software Foundation. Hij lanceerde de term 'copyleft', als tegenhanger van het copyright.

Dichter Tonnus Oosterhoff voegde een cd-rom met flash bewerkingen bij zijn gedichtenbundel 'Wij zagen ons in een kleine groep mensen veranderen'. Hij benaderde het Fonds voor de Letteren met het plan om nader te onderzoeken wat de mogelijkheden zijn van poëzie op internet. In een besloten bijeenkomst bij Waag Society buigen dichters, vormgevers en programmeurs zich over deze vraag.

Creative Learning / THE SURPLUS VALUE OF ICT IN EDUCATION

There are eight centers of expertise for ICT and education in the Netherlands, one of which is part of the Creative Learning program of Waag Society. In February representatives of all eight centers will convene at the Waag to discuss the surplus value of ICT in education. The ensuing publication will be distributed over all schools for primary and secondary education in the Netherlands. The publication will include good practices of each centre.

Interfacing Access / TEN STORYTELLING TABLES

At the start of 2003 the first Storytelling table was hailed at the Twiskehuis home for the elderly in North Amsterdam. Up to six people have ample choice of sound and image clips from the 20th century at the Storytelling table. Comments on the clips can be recorded, saved and listened back to. At 9 February 2004 the installation of ten tables in homes for the elderly throughout the Netherlands starts. The Centre for Research into Ageing will research whether the Storytelling Table has a sustained effect on decreasing the social isolation of the inhabitants of homes for the elderly. Furthermore the Trimbos-institute will possibly do research into the possibilities of the Storytelling Table in reminiscence training.

Creative Learning / LOCAL HERITAGE AT SCHOOL

More and more museums, libraries, monuments and archeological organisations begin to digitalise their collections. In what way can you make these sources accessible for grammar school education? The Login Locally project invites schools and heritage organisations to suggest solutions for this issue together with Waag Society and Erfgoed Actueel, in the form of a method and an on line environment. The point of departure is local heritage in the immediate school surroundings. Interested schools and heritage organisations can submit their plans to a commission. In 2004 two regional projects will be selected for further development.

Public Research / STALLMAN AND HART ON FREEDOM OF INFORMATION EVENING

Waag Society and Vrijschrift present an evening with Richard Stallman and Michael Hart. Richard Stallman will give a lecture on the impediment of software patents to the work of computer programmers, users and growth of the economy. Michael Hart will lecture on the Gutenberg project, in which books of which the copyright has expired are made available for free via the Internet. Vincent Everts will chair a panel discussion in the second part of the evening. 
Project Gutenberg is an initiative of Michael Hart, who has worked on at the University of Illinois since 1971. With the help of a host of volunteers already over 10.000 e-books have been published. Vrijschrift supports the Gutenberg project from the Netherlands.

Poet Tonnus Oosterhoff added a CD-ROM with flash edits of his poems to his latest publication 'Wij zagen ons in een kleine groep mensen veranderen'. He approached the Dutch Foundation for Literature with the plan to further investigate the possibilities of poetry on the Internet.In a private meeting at Waag Society poets, designers and computer programmers will address this issue.
