PIXEL, theglobe.com's digital gallery, is proud to present the Telegarden,
one of the first net art installations:

http://www.theglobe.com/arts/pixel

The Telegarden allows Internet users to view and interact with a remote
garden filled with living plants. Members of the garden can plant, water
and
monitor the progress of seedings via the tender movements of an industrial
robot arm. The Telegarden is installed in the lobby of the Ars
Electronica
Center in Austria.

``In linking their garden to the World Wide Web and creating an intuitive
interface for the control of the arm and camera, the artists transformed
what most would consider a fit of over-engineering into a subtle
rumination
on the nature of the Commons.'' -- Peter Lunenfeld, Flash Art, XXIX, 187,
March 1996.

Co-directors: Ken Goldberg (UC Berkeley) and Joseph Santarromana (Otis)
Project Team: George Bekey, Steven Gentner, Rosemary Morris, Carl Sutter,
Jeff Wiegley, Erich Berger (AEC)

A live chat event with Ken Goldberg and the Telegarden project team will
take place on March 2, at 6 PM EST. (18:00 New York time).

Ken Goldberg is Associate Professor of Engineering and founder of the Art,
Technology, and Culture Colloquium at UC Berkeley. His net art
installations have appeared in the Interactive Media Festival, the
Festival
for Interactive Arts, New Voices/New Visions, and the Beyond Interface
show
at the Walker Center. In 1995, Goldberg was selected as a Presidential
Faculty Fellow by the National Science Foundation. He's now working on an
installation for the ICC Biennale 1999 and editing a book for MIT Press.

"There is no solution because there is no problem" -- Duchamp

Duchamp lied; He chose to sound philosophical rather than impotent.
There is
no problem because there is no solution; is really the zeitgeist of the
art
world.

MWMWM shows post-political art; People who know how crazy it is, but
can't
seem to get off the train, even while it stands in the station. There is
revolution in the air. There are riots all over the world, but here we
sit.

Cultures evolve over thousands of years and what we, free-marketeers, live
in
today is the product of a hundred years of social engineering and
propaganda.
The perversion of our innate desires are twisted by powerful pragmatic
forces,
and when not yielding to conformity, some give way to sheer desperation,
or
crazed acting out. Jennifer Reeder was a pissed off grad student when she
created "White Trash Girl"; The Chronicles of a girl super hero's
misadventures.

As Laura Kipnis in her book "White Trash" says of Reeder's work, "This was
White Trash Girl's project: to deploy the classed and improper body onto
the
art world at-large. Because, while the art world habitues may play at
poverty
chic and disdain bourgeois conventionality, class hierarchies are still
entrenched and rigid, and the wrong sort of anti-style still marks you as
the
interloper, the gate crasher at the citadels of culture. Hence the birth
of
White Trash Girl, invented just to discombobulate the fairly unexamined
social
relations of the art education biz."

"White Trash Girl" has been exhibited at Documenta X, the MCA in
Barcelona,
the Whitney Museum and both the MCA and MOCA in LA. Reeder has been
featured
in the book "White Trash: Race and Class in America", and the New York
Times
Magazine. "White Trash Girl" -- the book is now in production. Jennifer
Reeder currently teaches at the very school where she was a grad student.

Her newest body of work "Cockfight" will also be exhibited at MWMWM. It
is an
idiosyncratic tribute to the early performance-based video art of Martha
Rosler, Linda Montano, Nina Sobell, Steina Vasulka, Linda Benglis, Nancy
Holt
and others.

--------------------------------------------------------
Directions to MWMWM: Take the "L" train to Lorimer Street, walk west on
Metropolitan Ave under the BQE -- turn make the first left on Marcy then
make
the first right onto Hope Street. We're on the ground floor -- 65 Hope
Street

Warmest Regards,
Chris murray
