Re: <nettime> If Gaza Were Here

Recently I saw a panoramic photograph of the city of Chicago after the
Great Fire of 1871. It was riveting. Everything was leveled. Great hulks of
destroyed stone buildings rose up, truncated, in the distance. In the
foreground the only things standing were the sails of boats docked along
the riverbank.

Over the days and weeks and months that followed, I held that image in
memory as I tried to imagine what is happening in Gaza.

The densely populated areas of the city cover an area about the size of the
Gaza Strip. I am not from here, so I know only the intensely political side
of the place, and on the left only. The Border Patrol has come to pick off
our neighbors. A National Security Directive has been launched against what
they call the cultural infrastructure of leftwing terrosism (go figure). I
don't do Instagram but I would be weirdly curious to see the stable
diffusion image of Chicago. I think a lot of people would. And yeah, it
does sound like Critical Art Ensemble.

best, BH
