<nettime> innovation

ell-labs-miracle.html]

An Op-Ed in today's NY Times Sunday Review is entitled "True
Innovation" and praises the work of Bell Labs. Something totally
missing from the 4 page article is ANY acknowledgement of the many
federal grants that enabled that "innovation": satellite tech, lasers,
transistors, etc. Bell Labs existed on money from the military and we
are reaping that whirlwind as the country staggers towards yet another
war to keep alive the businesses that this innovation promoted, even
as we chat and post on the crumbs of the unintended benefits. (For a
discussion of Federal money involved in satellite research check out
the courageous work of The Network Project, a 60's research group at
Columbia University. Their satellite report challenges the legality of
the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) granting of satellite
licenses to ANY private corporations since virtually all of the
development was publicly funded. )
