Issue's thematic title: Gender Issues in Music Technology

For this special issue on gender, we invite submissions in the form of
papers, short audio pieces or excerpts, and/or short audio-visual
artworks, related to gender issues.
Articles might focus on one or more of the following issues, although
other approaches are also welcome:
What is the relationship between gender and the use of contemporary
technology in pop music, electronic and computer music, experimental
and electroacoustic composition, live electronics, radiophonics,
multimedia, performance art, sound sculptures, and other sound art?
Which gender perspectives can be articulated in the composition,
production, performance, reception, interpretation or mediation of
these musical genres?
Why is there an apparent lack of women in most fields of contemporary
music technology and electronic audio art, and how does this relate to
the music, practices and interpretations?
How do musico-technological cultures relate to masculinity?
Are there feminine styles of electroacoustic composition?
How do women composers make a difference?
Guest editor Hannah Bosma will co-ordinate this issue. Please contact

Deadline for submissions is December 1, 2002. Audio and audio-visual
material will be presented as part of our annual CD-ROM which will
appear with issue 8/3.
The editors, as always, welcome submissions that fall outside of the
scope of this issue's theme.

acm has recently added the debut of a new VAC-UP
(virtual aesthetic curriculum user program) program
called "contextin' art," as well as new documentation
of the "Sexy or Sexism?" media project, to the home
page. past projects have been archived in the projects
section.
Contextin' Art is a new, ongoing database of artworks
that attempt to make visual connections between the
superstructure of Art, especially "New Media Art," and
their economic/political infrastructure. The first
installments re-visualize the Walker's "New Media
Initiatives" and the Whitney (including the ArtPort).
This is just one small effort to visualize economic
authoritarianism where it is often least visible. ACM
welcomes suggestions and submissions of artworks for
the Contextin' Art database.

The third issue of the Digital ImageMakers International magazine is up on
the web site, <http://www.dimagemaker.com/>, along with the first two
issues, for download as PDFs.
The new December issue contains a profile of digital artist David Ho,
product reviews and lots of news.
The January issue will be up on the web site on December 20th with a profile
of Christopher Barnaby.
The first issue had a profile of Steve Danzig.
The second had a profile of Joel Seah.
New Media people please note. With the January issue we wish to add more
material on new mediaı digital art. Iıll be adding appropriate news items
that get posted to us but we also need well written pieces of any length
(well, up to around 6 pages) covering any aspect of digital art and related
issues. We canıt pay yet, but it does provide you with a new venue and a lot
of people will read your work. Plus youıll be listed as a contributor. We
donıt mind how opinionated your pieces are, so long as they are well written
and have something relevant to say that advances the discussion of digital
art.

The book will be presented to the public by Dimitrina Sevova, Alain
Kessi and Emil Miraztchiev in the context of the "Konsequenz" project
curated by Frederikke Hansen in Shedhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, on 6
December (see <http://www.shedhalle.ch>; information about our workshop
there to follow soon).
The Communication Front project has grown over the years in a broader
context of media art, of net activisim, of mailing lists, meetings and
projects that allowed, outside the Art World System, informal contacts
and friendships between media artists, theorists and activists from East
and West. This communication context today presents itself in rather
different form. If at its beginnings, it has grown as a community of
people feeling part of a common movement and endeavor, now the channels
of communication that were the backbone of this community have turned
into more open channels of information flow. The media landscape is
changing dynamically, new tendencies are emerging, while others have
become history.
The context of this process, especially with regard to the East-West
axis that has always played an important role in it, is the broad topic
of the CFront 2000 Book. The deliberately eclectic selection of texts in
the book ranges from strictly theoretical, through anecdotal texts to
some fervent manifestos or experimental forms that are more
characteristic of hypertext and the Net. Some texts were written as
working materials for CFront 2000, the second edition of Communication
Front. Others were written after the event by participants inspired by
the discussions at CFront 2000. And a number of other authors who have
been part of these processes have been invited and have accepted to
contribute, either with existing, but not widely published texts, some
specially reworked for the CFront 2000 Book, or with original contributions.
