CONFERENCE SCOPE
====================

This cross-disciplinary conference explores the ways in which semiotics (and
related theories such as structuralism and post-structuralism) can be
applied to creating and analysing computer systems. It is intended for
anyone with an interest in areas of overlap (or potential overlap) between
semiotics and computers. This would include, but is not limited to, the
following: computer scientists; HCI and AI practitioners; creators of expert
systems; digital artists; designers; critics; semioticians; narratologists;
etc.

Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols and signification, and is therefore
the study of how meaning is created, encoded and understood. Computational
semiotics is understood here to be the application of semiotic theories to
computer systems and interactive digital media. Three possible aspects of
this are:

 - The way in which meaning can be created by, encoded in, or understood
   by, the computer (using systems or techniques based upon semiotics).
   
 - The way in which meaning in interactive digital media is understood by
   the viewer or user (again using systems or techniques based upon
   semiotics).
   
 - The way in which semiotics can be used as the starting point for a
   system for looking critically at the content of interactive digital
   media.

Media that make use of the unique capabilities of digital systems are of
particular interest to this conference. These include: hypermedia; content
analysis systems (particularly those that extract higher-level meaning); the
semantic web (and similar systems); multimedia and the internet; digital
art, net art and other technology-based or technology-oriented art forms,
computer games, interactive narratives and other forms of interactive
entertainment; virtual reality systems and virtual environments.

COSIGN 2002 invites submissions in the following categories:

3. Posters
4. Technical Demonstrations

Details of the submission procedures are given below. Authors of accepted
papers will be required to prepare an electronic version for the online
conference proceedings (PDF), which will supplement the traditional printed
volume.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
====================

1. ACADEMIC PAPERS

Papers are invited on any subject that explores areas of overlap (or
potential overlap) between semiotics and interactive digital media. Examples
of this include, but are not limited to, the following:

 - The use of semiotics in artificial intelligence and expert systems.
 
 - Software architectures and technologies using, based upon or inspired by
   semiotic theories, systems or models.
   
 - The use of semiotics in the creation of generative narrative systems,
   interactive digital games, entertainment and artworks.
   
 - The use of semiotics in the study and criticism of digital interactive
   media.
 
 - Narratology in games and new media.
 
 - Semiotic-orientated HCI.
 
 - Semiotics and Hypermedia.

Papers should demonstrate an understanding of - and engagement with - the
principles of semiotics (understood here as the study of signs) and gain
something from this engagement.

2. ARTWORKS

In addition to academic and theoretical papers, presentations of artworks of
all forms and in all formats are invited. We are particularly interested in
digital art, net art and other technology-based or technology-oriented art
forms.

Selection of work for presentation at the conference will be based upon its
relevance to the themes of the conference, its interest in demonstrating or
exploring the potential of new media, and its challenging of perceptions,
theoretical assumptions, or understanding in any areas related to the
conference. Selection may also be constrained by practical requirements for
equipment, safety, etc.

Final decisions will be made by the Artwork Committee. Artworks will be
assessed on the basis of documentation of the work presented in the form of
an online website. The website should display the following:

 - A textual description of the proposed artwork and any illustrations
 - A biography of the artist(s)/author(s)
 - Contact details

Please submit the URL of the website containing your proposal in an email to

3. POSTERS

There will be an opportunity for researchers to present new work and ideas
that are not yet ready for the full presentation. Short papers will be

electronic proceedings.

Today we see the cyborg everywhere around us - Arnold Schwarzenegger's
Terminator, Star Trek's Borg, William Gibson's cyberpunks and Nintendo's
GameBoy. The Uncanny is a wide-ranging exhibition that explores historical
and contemporary representation of the cybernetic body - the combination of
human and machine - in the visual arts and popular culture. 

The exhibition proceeds from the premise that the image of the cyborg has
traditionally provided our culture with a visual metaphor for the anxiety
that accompanied the growing presence of the machine in western culture.
Modern culture¹s representation of the cyborg shuttles between a celebratory
fascination with the machine and an intense anxiety around masculinity and
mechanical equipment.

Key historical works will include a 19th century automaton, 19th century
scientific photography and early 20th artworks by Marcel Duchamp, Pablo
Picasso, Fernand Léger and Francis Picabia. The exhibition will also include
contemporary works by Tony Oursler, Moriko Mori, Gary Hill, Takashi
Murakami, Lee Bul, Survival Research Lab and many more. Both the historical
and contemporary sections of the exhibition will be supplemented with
popular cultural representations of the cyborg ranging from 19th century
illustrations and prints to contemporary film and Japanese anime,
literature, comic books and illustrations.

Sparking and pulsing somewhere across the mediascape, freshly formed
from the collision and convergence of newer media arts, is Mediatopia.
Amongst the flowering of net art and exhibitions comes the writing of
books and papers, the creation of histories, the symposia, the
proliferation of departments and faculty positions,  and the acquisition
of new media by museums and institutions.  Looming in the wake of our
new-born fascination with digital methodologies comes a pixelated plane
filled with broken links and obsolete plug-ins.  What have we projected
upon this technological dream?  When we wake, do we come to an
experience charged with politics, technological decay, and obscurity of
medium and presentation?  Questions of power, position, and perception
arise in this dystopian meltdown.  Who has access to these
technologies?  Who is the expert or authority?  Who defines this media
work and how?  How do we preserve it?  What are the formats and
conventions?  What is the relationship between the individual and the
institution?  Can we differentiate between creative workers for capital
and comrades in the Arts?  Is there a safe site for play, pleasure, and
the artistic practice, and what is it's URL?

Mediatopia, overarching like a giant sci-fi plastic bubble, signifies
our desire to draw together all these disparate experiences and ideas
under the cozy warmth of the mother ship.  Creatives, technicians and
critical theorists are fascinated by these digital means.   The
residuals in this process creep into the canon of practice and are used
to define and construct an electronic world and a flesh filled one.
Therefore we ask questions and we manipulate information.  Join us in

To coincide with the exhibition 2002 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art -
conVerge: where are and science meet - the  Adelaide Festival 2002 will convene
a two-day symposium exploring relationships between the arts and sciences in the
context of sustainable futures.

Many artists currently exploring scientific, technological and cultural
developments of the 21st Century are engaged in a critical debate.  This is a
discourse suffused and indeed inspired by complex sociological and political
issues and these creative disciplines, areas of cultural practice often
understood to be at odds with one another, must engage if we are to understand
our future and the roles of creative individuals within it.

This symposium has been developed to complement the 2002 Adelaide Biennial of
Australian Art, an exhibition of work by Australian artists exploring these
areas of debate to be staged by the Art Gallery of South Australia during the
Adelaide Festival 2002.  The intention of the symposium is to broaden dialogue,
generate ideas and raise awareness of the contributions both artists and
scientists can make to the larger challenges of our time.

Nationally and internationally significant artists, scientists and thinkers will
come together to create an open site for audiences to engage with this debate -
to become participants in the development of ideas rather than a merely passive
audience. The symposium will encompass presentations, performances, workshops
and panel discussions.

The project will provide a research environment, as it were, where the public
may see, experience and contribute to a range of ideas and media at play.

**Partnerships**
Australian artists engaging with science practices, issues and themes within a
variety of environments have created collaborations with individual scientists,
science research organisations and industry.

In turn, "'big science' is turning to human creativity for help.  Major research
bodies such as CSIRO and those within corporations such as Xerox are calling in
artists to work collaboratively with their scientists in pushing back boundaries
of technological development." (Quiddington).

What happens at the points of intersection between these two various
disciplines? How might this contribute to the development of an expanded and
more supple creativity in social development? What are some of the issues
inhibiting cross-disciplinary exchange?

**Bioeconomics**
As we enter the 21st Century, key issues that face our economy that confront
economic development are shifting away from those of the late-Industrial Age
towards an era in which life-sciences and biotechnology are fashioning a
bio-industrial world.  Public awareness and broad-ranging debate on the
implications of these trends are crucial to any realisation of the promised
benefits of biotechnology.

**Genomics**
Management of genetic information is a key issue currently facing human society.
Recombinant genetics is one of the most dramatic technological developments/new
phenomena to date in the area of biotechnology. New techniques for identifying
and manipulating genes are the first strand in what Jeremy Rifkin describes as
'the new operational matrix of the Biotech Century'. While the motivation behind
genetic engineering is age-old, the technology itself represents something
qualitatively new.  To understand why this is the case, we must appreciate the
distinction between traditional tinkering with biological organisms and the
mutational potential of current genetic engineering.

**Image and Meaning**
This session will explore concepts of scientific visualisation and
representation, the ever more complex relationships between different semantic
systems (collusions and collisions of meaning between images, signs, texts), the
use of scientific language, science communication, graphical representation of
numerical data inter alia.

**Knowledge Systems**
Is science universal?  Value the contribution of other cultures and
philosophical models towards this body of knowledge we call science towards the
instrumental ordering of our collective
knowledge about the world and nature's functioning. Examine interconnected
relationships between people, species, natural systems and culture as a means of
understanding our world. Does science define itself or is it socially contingent
and culturally embedded. Who own this scientific truth[s]?

**Ecology**
In order to explore sustainable futures, artists and scientists alike are
turning to the environment and the impact that we have had on nature and the
world around us.  Understanding our dependency upon the world in which is key to
how we relate to our environment and how we preserve its diversity.

Focused on New Technologies in Media Literacy, AGORA 2002 aims to bring
together some of the most prolific researchers, producers and innovators
from the overlapping fields of ICT and education, while providing unique
opportunities for synergies and investements in the fast developing
marketplace of the Mediterranean basin.

PROGRAM:

AGORA 2002 kicks off the 15th of June with the MED=C9=D4=C5RRANEAN YOUTH =
AND MEDIA
OBSERVATORY one day conference. Members and partners of the MedObs'
international network aim to influence the policies related to Youth and
Media and to open to the Mediterranean basin new cooperations schemes on
this field with the rest of the world.

In the following day, June the 16th, in collaboration with Italian =
RAISAT
Ragazzi, AGORA will host the CHILDRENS' CHANNELS FORUM. Thematic =
channels
for children from different countries all over the world will compare =
their
experiences and cooperate in order to create a real and useful network =
to
exchange products, projects and ideas. The forum will be complemented by =
the
workshop MONITORING EXPERIENCES ON TV PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN in an =
attempt to
underline the necessities of both the researchers and the Media =
Operators.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN MEDIA LITERACY will be the thematic axis of the =
sessions
scheduled for the third day, 17th of June. This part-conference,
part-hands-on-lab will bring together electronic media producers and
e-content programmers, researchers, digital artists, media tutors, media
education designers, psychologists and children; anyone who is involved =
in
the making of a school for the future.

Another ECTC initiative that will be presented for illumination the 17th =
of
June in AGORA, is the MEDIA SUMMER SCHOOL. Conceived as a summer =
training
camp where old and new will meet, analogue and digital will infuse, the
first Mediterranean school for children has been programmed to open its
doors in 2004, at the village of  Giffoni, Southern Italy.  AGORA will =
host
the first of a series of preparatory workshops where new concepts, =
ideas,
desings and applications on interactive media education will be debated, =
and

The last day of AGORA, 18th of June, is dedicated to Collaboration =
Networks.
On of the initiatives that will be presented and discussed.is the WORLD
SPORTS EXPO FOR YOUTH 2004 project. WSE is a global exhibition to be
organized in Athens in July and August 2004. The exhibition is to =
feature
visual, audiovisual and web-based creations addressed to children as =
well as
art  creations produced  by children. It will carry out an indicative
mapping of the international situation and a wide-ranging and detailed
presentation of global realities at an historic moment when the Olympic
Games are returning to their birthplace.

Un proyecto de centrodearte.com en colaboracion con Constant

Read*Write*Execute*, numero 2 de la revista & foro de centrodearte.com, 
plantea un analisis de la web como espacio politico y social a traves de 
estrategias de descentralizacion de informacion. Read*Write*Execute* 
reflexiona sobre temas como copyright/left, acceso, des/centralizacion, 
censura, difusion autonoma y vigilancia online, cultura del Software Libre, 
e incide sobre la importancia del trabajo en red para crear un tejido 
socio-cultural a traves de proyectos, ensayos, entrevistas, foros, etc.

TALLER

Del 11 al 14 de febrero de 2002 se desarrollara un taller de introduccion y 
analisis de la cultura del Software Libre, cuyo objetivo es mostrar su 
aplicacion y utilizacion como herramienta de trabajo a artistas, 
activistas, periodistas y profesionales del mundo del arte y del 
pensamiento contemporaneo.

El taller pretende servir de iniciacion a la cultura del Software Libre 
(referencia a la libertad de los usuarios a utilizar, cambiar y mejorar el 
software, distribuirlo y distribuir el software con las modificaciones 
realizadas) a personas con una posicion politico e intelectual afin a esta, 
y crear una plataforma de colaboracion, con el objetivo de suscitar una 
reflexion que inspire nuevas iniciativas y propuestas.
